Bridging Cultures in Game Development: Building Sustainable Co-Dev Pipelines for Asia’s Rising Role
The global gaming landscape is undergoing a dramatic shift. While North America and Europe have historically dominated the narrative of game creation and outsourcing, the coming decade will see Asia—particularly Japan, Korea, China, and Southeast Asia—play a far more central role, not only as consumers but as leading creators of content. This change will require more intentional approaches to cultural context, communication processes, and co-development structures. In this talk, Yuya Kato and Harish Rao will draw on their combined 40+ years of experience to explore how cultural understanding, workflow design, and outsourcing pipelines can evolve to meet the growing demands from Asian studios. Yuya Kato, CEO of Green Path Educational Inc., brings deep expertise in cross-cultural communication. Having grown up in Japan before building his career in North America, Yuya has spent nearly two decades helping companies avoid costly missteps caused by cultural and linguistic misunderstandings. His perspective highlights how respect, trust, and open-minded collaboration form the foundation of successful long-term partnerships. Harish Rao, a veteran leader in external development with past leadership roles at Blizzard Entertainment, Fox Interactive, and most recently as Manager of Outsourcing Art and Concept at Sony PlayStation, complements this with operational insight. At PlayStation, he spearheaded a global initiative to centralize and streamline outsourcing operations, introducing new efficiencies across multiple studios. His work demonstrates how intentional planning, vendor pre-selection, and asset-sharing infrastructure can reduce costs while elevating creative quality. Together, they will examine case studies in concept art, 3D asset creation, vendor management, and global team collaboration. The session will emphasize how studios can adapt processes to ensure smoother collaboration with Asian developers, from pre-planning pipelines to integrating workflows and protecting cultural nuance in storytelling and design.
