GDS2024

RECAP

SUMMARY OF GDS2024

Last year had an empowering vibe according to Riot Games’ Shiew Yeu Loh. We are happy to have successfully cultivated an atmosphere of open communication and professional cooperation.

EXTERNAL DEVELOPMENT TRACK

Helping hands is key to a thriving ecosystem. This was a recurring theme in the GDS2024: ExDev Track which was opened by a keynote from Ryan Lastimosa, Chief Creative Officer for Sentinel Games and former Creative Director for Respawn Entertainment. His inspiring stories gave us a glimpse of the challenges within the AAA space.

He was then followed by a talk from Riot Games’ Senior Art Outsourcing Manager, Shiew Yeu Loh on
An Environment for Effective Communication, a necessity in the massive and complex undertakings Riot has had to tackle.

Erik Petterson and Kim Aava, artists from EA DICE gave a presentation on
The Power of External Partnership Collaboration showing us how much coordination and teamwork is needed to power AAA releases.

Two other panels shared their insights from each of their perspectives:

Panel 1: External Dev Success in Southeast Asia

Panel 2: Developer/Publisher Panel on External Dev

INDIE GAMES TRACK

The Indie Games Track had been a wellspring of knowledge that had a variety of topics that concern both new and veteran indie developers the most. It opened with a keynote address from Bam Aquino, an ardent supporter of the game development industry in the Philippines.

Then, Kristian Roberts (Nordicity), detailed must have government resources and incentives for games in his talk on
Optimized Base-Building: How Indie Studios Can Leverage Supports and Incentives.

Jason della Rocca (Execution Labs) and Thiery Baujard (Spielfabrique) each fleshed out their perspectives on game development investment in their talks:
Funding Models: Understanding How To Invest In Games and Investing In Games In Public/Private Partnership respectively.

Juney Dijkstra (EA XDI), ways of multiplying both creativity and productivity in her talk on
Leveraging External Development Creatively.

WORKSHOPS

Last year was proof that one need only reach out to find a helping hand. And in GDS2025, we hope to do even more.
